Dolby Atmos – What can I watch/hear in Atmos?

IAT Dolby Atmos Movies

Since Dolby introduced the new sound technology in 2012, numerous film-makers have opted to use it. The first ever film to use Atmos was Disney Pixar’s Brave, which premiered at the Atmos-equipped Dolby Theatre in Hollywood in 2012. Since then, Atmos has become increasingly popular. Dolby has a list of films from 2015/16 that have used the technology.

What is Dolby Atmos?

Dolby Atmos is a surround sound technology with more flexibility in the presentation of sound in a movie or home theatre space. It allows for sounds to be treated as “objects” that the system can position in the listening space beyond the limitations of traditional 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound channels.

As with any new technology, that makes its way into the home theatre realm, there’s always an adoption period.

Since its unveiling in the Summer of 2014, almost all home theatre receivers include Dolby Atmos decoding.

Many consumers, however, have not yet been able to justify the expense or possible reconfiguration of their home theatre systems because there hasn’t been enough Dolby Atmos encoded content available.

This is definitely changing, and more Blu-ray titles that utilize Dolby Atmos continue to be released at a steady pace. The following is a list of some key available Blu-ray and streaming releases that are Dolby Atmos encoded.

What We Can Expect for Future Releases

It would be great if we could get Dolby Atmos re-issues on Blu-ray of such films as “Brave,” “Godzilla 2014,” “X-Men: Days of Future Past” and ” Pacific Rim,” all of which were released theatrically with Dolby Atmos soundtracks. In fact, “Brave” was the first film to be released theatrically with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack.

However, it is unlikely that the movie studios involved will go back and re-issue past films on Blu-ray that originally had Dolby Atmos theatrical soundtracks—at least not until there is a large base of consumers with Dolby Atmos home theatre systems that demand it.
